Oh, Brother! Three Pairs of Siblings Power BU Men’s Hockey Success

There is no shortage of brotherly love on the Boston University men’s hockey team this season.

The Terriers, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, boast three sets of brothers on their powerhouse team: Case McCarthy (Questrom’23, SHA’24) and Gavin McCarthy (CAS’27), Lane Hutson (CAS’26) and Quinn Hutson (SHA’26), and Macklin Celebrini (CAS’27) and Aiden Celebrini (SHA’27). All of them have made key contributions to BU’s dominance in the first half of the season. The experience has been special

“Telepathic” Twins: Lilli and Luisa Welcke Are Elevating BU Women’s Hockey

The BU women’s hockey team jokes that identical twins Lilli and Luisa Welcke have telepathic powers.

Lilli (CAS’26) and Luisa (CAS’26) are best friends, roommates, and—of course—teammates. Naturally, they do just about everything together.

On the ice, the forwards from Heidelberg, Germany, play on the same line. Off the ice, they are frequently together, sharing the same friends, laughing at the same jokes, and discovering new museums and coffee spots in Boston together.

“We’ve always had che

The Vietnamese-American community has long been a thriving force in Fields Corner. They have raised families, built businesses and transformed a busy Dorchester Avenue stretch into Little Saigon, rich with cultural experiences.

Shorthanded Terriers to close out 2023 with non conference clash at Yale – The Boston Hockey Blog

The bad news? The Boston University men’s hockey team will be without its superstars for Friday’s game at Yale, since Macklin Celebrini, Lane Hutson and Tom Willander are in Gothenburg, Sweden competing at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

The good news? The Bulldogs are one of the worst teams in the nation, ranking 55th of the 64 teams in PairWise. On paper, BU should be just fine in the absence of its top guns.

Breaking down BU’s star-studded 2007-born recruiting class – The Boston Hockey Blog

The Boston University men’s hockey team has wrapped up its recruiting class of 2007-born skaters.

It is an embarrassment of riches.

This week alone, the Terriers received commitments from two highly-touted USHL defensemen: Sascha Boumedienne of the Youngstown Phantoms and Carter Amico of the U.S. National Team Development Program. In full, the class consists of seven skaters — four defenseman and three forwards.

Reports describe Fondrk as an all-around playmaker with a great hockey IQ and an

How Caitlin Weimar Became an “Unstoppable Force” for BU Women’s Basketball

Caitlin Weimar rose up to shoot and Case Gymnasium held its breath.

With its November 6 season-opener against UMass Lowell tied at 58 and the clock’s final seconds ticking away, the Boston University women’s basketball team had the ball and time for one final play. Weimar (COM’24), BU’s 6-foot-4 star forward, battled for position in the paint.

The River Hawks tried to deny her the ball and collapsed into a double team when she snagged it in the low post. It didn’t matter. Weimar took a dribble

Women’s hockey dominates Providence in 5-1 victory, seals two-win weekend – The Boston Hockey Blog

BOSTON — Even after the Boston University women’s hockey team suffered loss after loss in a dismal 1-5-1 stretch, head coach Tara Watchorn remained steadfast in her message to the team.

The wins will come. Focus on the process.

In a Saturday matinee against Providence College, the Terriers played to their process. They executed crisp line changes, they generated scoring chances and they played to their habits. The result — a 5-1 triumph — followed suit.

“I think everyone can agree that’s a ni

BU Athletics announces ‘historic’ upgrades to Walter Brown Arena, women’s hockey facilities – The Boston Hockey Blog

Significant upgrades are in store for Walter Brown Arena, the historic rink that is home to Boston University’s women’s hockey program, BU Athletics announced in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

According to the release, the renovations to Walter Brown will be “the most significant renovation of an existing facility in BU Athletics history.” The updates will take place in 2024.

Terriers outmuscle Merrimack in chippy road win, 4-1 – The Boston Hockey Blog

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — It was some combination of a hockey game, a fever dream and an all-out brawl. Or, as Boston University head coach Jay Pandolfo called it, a “gong show.”

After 103 penalty minutes, three major penalties and a mid-game fire alarm, the Terriers (10-4-1, 6-1-1 Hockey East) emerged from Lawler Rink with a 4-1 win over Merrimack College (6-7-1, 2-5-1 HEA) on Friday in a rematch of last season’s Hockey East title game.

“This is a tough place to play. We haven’t had a ton of suc

In top-five matchup with Quinnipiac, BU looks to ‘be ready for the challenge’ – The Boston Hockey Blog

For a game in November, the stakes could not be much higher.

Two of the nation’s best will face off when the Boston University men’s hockey team hosts Quinnipiac University Wednesday evening at Agganis Arena. The puck drops at 5 p.m.

“They’re a very structured team, very hard to play against,” BU head coach Jay Pandolfo said of the Bobcats after Saturday’s game against Maine. “So it’s another measuring stick game for our team.”

Red Hot Hockey: Renewing Their Rivalry, BU and Cornell Set to Face Off

With the historic men’s hockey rivalry between Boston University and Cornell University as strong as ever, the ninth installment of Red Hot Hockey returns to New York City’s Madison Square Garden Saturday at 8 pm.

There is no love lost between the Terriers and Big Red. They played twice last season and BU won both games, each decided by one goal and each tense up to the final horn. At Red Hot Hockey, the biennial showdown between the two historic programs, the teams will bang it out once more.

Bo MacCormack (431 yards, 8 TDs), BB&N trample Tabor in NEPSAC John Papas Bowl victory - The Boston Globe

“I think he’s the best player in the state,” said BB&N coach Mike Willey. “The thing that sets him apart is his toughness, his leadership, his work ethic. There is no one that really compares to how hard and tough and as good a leader as he is. He is a special, special young man.”

The junior running back rumbled 40 times for 431 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in a dominating 63-43 victory over host Tabor. MacCormack also threw a 40-yard touchdown pass and recorded an interception on defense

Fueled by its power play, BU takes down Maine, 3-2 – The Boston Hockey Blog

BOSTON — Take penalties against the No. 8 Boston University men’s hockey team at your own peril.

With their power play clicking on all cylinders, the Terriers captured a 3-2 win over No. 9 University of Maine Friday night at Agganis Arena. All three tallies came on the man advantage.

“Special teams was the difference tonight,” BU head coach Jay Pandolfo said postgame. “Overall, really happy with the win.”

Men’s Basketball Takes on Bryant in Home Opener Thursday

Joe Jones has no illusions about the outlook for his BU men’s basketball team. Following the graduation last May of several key players, this year’s team is largely young and inexperienced. The team’s head coach, Jones, knows there will be a learning curve.

But with a process-oriented mindset, he believes the Terriers have the tools to remain competitive in the Patriot League. “We need to continue to grow and learn and improve, and not focus on the results,” he says. “Because if we can focus on

Offense falls flat as women’s hockey loses to Harvard, 3-1 – The Boston Hockey Blog

ALLSTON, Mass. — This one was a stunner.

Facing a Harvard team that had yet to win a game this season, the Boston University women’s hockey team struggled to find its game. The Terriers fell into an early hole and couldn’t dig out of it, losing, 3-1, to the Crimson at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center Tuesday night.

“Not the start we wanted, and that’s something we need to address as a group,” BU head coach Tara Watchorn said postgame. “That being said, a lot of good again. It was our game in th

Men’s Soccer Wins First-Ever Patriot League Title

Moments after the BU men’s soccer team won its first-ever Patriot League title, Kevin Nylen summed up the Terriers’ magical run to the championship with one word: “love.”

“There aren’t many better feelings than winning, and it’s hard to win,” the coach said after the championship game Saturday afternoon on Nickerson Field, tears welling in his eyes. “I love what I do, and I love who I do it with.”

After her arm was caught in a boat propeller, Malden Catholic’s Thea Sanzone was told her swimming career was over. She didn’t listen. - The Boston Globe

“I don’t think I really believed it or processed it,’’ said Sanzone, a three-year cocaptain of the Malden Catholic girls’ swimming team. “I was just kind of like, ‘Well, I’ll take it one day at a time.’ ”

Everyone around her — friends, family, coaches, and teammates — accepted her new reality. She did not.

After Thea Sanzone was injured in a boating accident two summers ago, a surgeon delivered the news that she may never swim competitively again.

More than a year after the accident, Sanzone

Men’s hockey prepares for UMass Lowell’s structured defense in Hockey East home-and-home – The Boston Hockey Blog

The Boston University men’s hockey team knows what to expect when it faces UMass Lowell in a home-and-home series this weekend: physicality and defensive structure.

“They don’t beat themselves,” BU head coach Jay Pandolfo said of the River Hawks. “They’re going to have four or five guys back in the neutral zone, and they’re going to play with structure in all three zones. They have great sticks, they finish their checks hard around their net.”

Under head coach Norm Bazin, UMass Lowell (4-4-0,

Women’s Basketball Shoots to Top Last Season’s Near-Championship

Fueled by confidence after an outstanding 2022-2023 campaign, albeit one that ended in heartbreak, the BU women’s basketball team heads into this season with a mix of young talent and veteran star power, along with a sizable chip on their collective shoulder.

Last year, the Terriers dominated the Patriot League regular season with a 17-1 conference record, but then lost a close game in the conference championship to Holy Cross at Case Gymnasium, costing them an automatic bid to the NCAA March M

Men’s Soccer Hosts Colgate in Patriot League Semifinals Tuesday

It’s been a season of milestones for the BU men’s soccer team. The Terriers captured their first regular season Patriot League title in nine years, notched their first 10-win season since 2015, and secured home-field advantage in the Patriot League tournament.

But head coach Kevin Nylen and the Terriers are focused squarely on what’s ahead: a date with Colgate in the Patriot League semifinals on Tuesday, November 7. The game begins at 6 pm on Nickerson Field.

With a new playbook, the Acton-Boxborough girls extended their run to three straight MIAA North sectional swimming championships - The Boston Globe

But this year, the Revolution do not have that luxury, bringing just 10 athletes to Sunday’s MIAA North sectional at Boston University. But even a thinner roster didn’t stop the Revolution from winning the meet for a third consecutive time.

Depth has been a hallmark for the Acton-Boxborough girls’ swim team, which hasn’t lost a sectional or state meet this decade.

“We definitely won in a different way,” said A-B’s Isabela Teixeira. “Every year, though, it’s really important to not only swim fo

In complete effort, gritty play powers BU to 3-2 win over North Dakota – The Boston Hockey Blog

For about two seconds, Dylan Peterson lay on the ice writhing in pain. The senior forward had just taken a powerful slapshot to the left foot, and he began to hobble back towards the bench.

Then, he changed his mind. Peterson dove back into the fray, putting his body in front of another shot. When the 10-second sequence was over, Peterson had earned himself three blocked shots and a gnarly bruise.

The gutsy play was a microcosm of BU’s 3-2 win over No. 3 North Dakota at Agganis Arena Friday ni
