Basketball pillar Rucker Park will forever have a long legacy through NBA stars

Marvin “Hammer” Stevens surveys the court at Rucker Park from the shade of a tent by the baseline, shaking his head at the game of streetball before him.

A player misses a layup, then grabs his own rebound and misses again. The bleachers are about half full on this warm summer evening.

“When we played, this was all different,” Stevens says, looking around. “This is nothing compared to our games. No comparison.”

That’s not exactly a groundbreaking declaration. These days, Rucker mostly h...

Juice Wells Jr. has sights set on making Giants dream happen with college teammate Jaxson Dart

Whenever he stays at the facility for late work after a training camp practice, Giants rookie Juice Wells Jr. glances over at the locker two spots to his right.

It’s almost always cluttered with gear, which is how the wide receiver knows his former quarterback at Ole Miss, Jaxson Dart, is putting in the extra work, too.

“I might come back in from the laser bed or the hyperbaric chamber, he’s in there getting right, doing a little stretch, and working his arm out or something like that,”...

Michael Kay, YES Network personalities to star on ‘Bronx Buds’ cartoon

Like countless other kids in the 1960s and 70s, Michael Kay spent his Saturday mornings glued to the TV for weekly showings of his favorite cartoons, “The Flintstones” and “The Jetsons.”

That made it an easy answer for the Yankees broadcaster when creative directors at YES Network approached him about appearing on Season 2 of “Bronx Buds,” the baseball-themed animated children’s series that streams on the Gotham Sports App.

“I mean, Saturday was like a big deal,” Kay told The Post. “That’s...

Austin Wells’ brutal blunder costs Yankees in ninth after Anthony Volpe’s dramatic homer

In a crucial spot, Austin Wells forgot the lesson Little League coaches drill into their players on a daily basis: Always know the number of outs.

As a result, the Yankees catcher made a brutal baserunning blunder in the bottom of the ninth of Wednesday night’s 5-4, 11-inning win over the Rays, with the 45,355 at Yankee Stadium still buzzing from Anthony Volpe’s game-tying home run moments before.

Wells had lined a one-out single into center field, and Trent Grisham laid a well-placed bunt...

The psychology behind Anthony Volpe’s error-filled game — and how the Yankees can fix him

It doesn’t take a Ph.D. to watch a Yankees game and diagnose Anthony Volpe’s defensive struggles as a possible mental issue.

That much has become obvious as the shortstop has made an MLB-leading 15 errors this season, including two in Tuesday’s 7-5 win over the Rays at Yankee Stadium.

The question at Yankee Stadium has become what to do with the floundering Volpe. Keep him at shortstop? Bench him temporarily? Send him to the minors for a week?

Jets’ Joe Tippmann ‘excited’ to be in battle for starting job after initial shock

Joe Tippmann admitted that when this offseason began, he wasn’t expecting to find himself in an open competition for his position.

That has become the reality for Tippmann, who enters Jets training camp in a battle for the starting center spot with the freshly signed Josh Myers.

Nonetheless, the 24-year-old out of Wisconsin said he’s making the best of the situation.

“At first, I mean, it took me by surprise a little bit,” Tippmann said after Wednesday’s first day of training camp in F...

Memorabilia dealer found dead after alleged $350 million counterfeit confession on Facebook

A prominent sports memorabilia businessman was found dead after police carried out a search warrant into his allegedly fraudulent operation on Tuesday.

Brett Lemieux, 45 of Westfield, Ind., was the founder of noted sports memorabilia site MisterManCave, which he claimed sold more than four million counterfeit items and surpassed $350 million in sales in a 1,200-word Facebook post on the “Autographs 101” group Wednesday morning.

Hours after Lemieux published the post, Westfield police confi...

Cole Eiserman’s elite asset is almost unexplainable — his old coaches dish on what sets him apart

Cole Eiserman’s former coaches can agree the Islanders draftee has one of the best shots they’ve ever seen.

But ask different coaches what exactly makes Eiserman’s shot so tough to stop, and the theories will vary. There is no consensus.

Tim Kyrkostas, one of Eiserman’s youth coaches in the Boston area, pointed to an “understanding of the concept of time and space.”

Kyrkostas — who has also coached NHLers Shayne Gostisbehere, Jakob Chychrun and Brandon Duhaime at the youth level — compa...

Boston University prospects Cole Eiserman, Kamil Bednarik looking to make mark with Islanders

By now, Cole Eiserman and Kamil Bednarik have spent countless hours together.

They’ve been teammates, linemates, classmates, roommates and Islanders draftmates — all in a three-year stretch with the U.S. National Team Development Program and Boston University.

They’re also close friends who know each other well enough to admit the following with confidence: They couldn’t be more different.

“He’s a quieter kid,” Eiserman told The Post at Islanders rookie camp in early July, which both pr...

Yankees’ Will Warren rebounds from rough start to stifle Mariners

The past week has taught Will Warren a valuable lesson about the ebbs and flows of a 162-game season.

Last Wednesday, the Yankees rookie gave up eight runs to the Blue Jays in four innings, including seven in the first, as his team suffered a crushing loss at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Seven days later, he was terrific in the Yankees’ 10-3 win over the Mariners on Tuesday in The Bronx, tossing 5 ²/₃ scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

“I think you can take every outing and learn from...

Islanders’ rookie camp a ‘full 360 moment’ for Long Island trio

Brandon Chabrier can hardly believe it, but he’s been skating at Northwell Health Ice Rink for longer than the Islanders have called it home.

Chabrier was at the facility, then called Twin Rinks Ice Center, on the day it opened in 2014 as an 11-year-old. The Islanders moved operations to the rink in 2016.

So, naturally, it was hard for Chabrier, a Bayville native, to wipe the ear-to-ear grin off his face as he stood by his new locker in the Islanders’ swanky dressing room at the East Meado...

Yankees place Mark Leiter on IL as bullpen problems mount

The already depleted Yankees bullpen is taking another hit.

Reliever Mark Leiter Jr. was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a stress fracture in his left leg, and manager Aaron Boone said there is no timetable for the right-hander’s return.

Leiter said he “felt a little pop” covering first base in the 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Reds on June 24 in Cincinnati, and that the injury developed from there.

He and the Yankees training staff initially thought it was a calf injur...

Islanders fans celebrate start of Matthew Schaefer era in grand fashion at UBS Arena NHL draft party

Mathieu Darche called the shots from the makeshift war room in the Islanders’ dressing room at UBS Arena. Just a few dozen yards away, a packed house of fans reacted to his every move.

Fans filled the arena’s floor and the lower bowl for Friday’s NHL draft party as the Islanders began a new era by selecting Matthew Schaefer with the top pick.

The clear sentiments from those in attendance: excitement and optimism at the selections of Schaefer, Victor Eklund (16th overall) and Kashawn Aitc...

Casey O’Brien had homecoming dream fulfilled as Sirens draft pick

Sitting with her family at Tuesday’s PWHL Draft in Ottawa, Ont., Casey O’Brien was talking through her most likely landing spots — Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa — when she learned the Sirens had traded up for the third pick.

“Oh, my god,” she thought to herself. “Wait, am I going to New York?”

O’Brien knew there was a good chance. And when the Sirens confirmed her suspicions by picking her a few moments later, she felt a mix of “shock and excitement.”

“I think I blacked out,” O’Brien t...

White Sox fan who taunted Ketel Marte about his dead mom banned from all MLB ballparks

The 22-year-old White Sox fan who yelled at Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte about his late mother has been banned indefinitely from all MLB ballparks, The Post confirmed. The league and the White Sox worked together on the decision.

Marte was visibly distraught after hearing the comments during the top of the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game — and he broke down into tears during the bottom half of the inning.

He was consoled on the field by Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who...

Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte cries on field in heartbreaking scene after fan’s disturbing comments

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte broke down in tears on the field Tuesday night after a heckler allegedly made comments about his late mother.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said after the 4-1 road win over the White Sox that the fan made the purported remarks during Marte’s at-bat in the top of the seventh inning.

Lovullo put his arm around Marte and consoled him while on the field to make a pitching change in the bottom of the inning, and Marte continued to wipe away tears during t...

Meet Mark Walter, the billionaire who agreed to buy Lakers in historic $10B deal

After shelling out a record-breaking sum of approximately $10 billion, Mark Walter is soon to be the new owner of the Lakers.

The 65-year-old Walter, a businessman with a net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires’ index, agreed to buy the Lakers from the Buss family in the largest-ever sale of a U.S. sports franchise, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday.

He’s the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, a financial services firm with more than $325 billion in assets, and...

How Jeanie Buss will factor into Lakers after historic $10 billion sale

Jeanie Buss and her family have agreed to sell their majority stake in the Lakers, but that doesn’t mean her involvement with the franchise is over.

The 63-year-old Buss will stay as the Lakers’ governor and continue to run the team for “at least a number of years,” according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, a plan new majority owner Mark Walter “fully endorsed.”

On Wednesday afternoon, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the Buss family was selling its majority ownership to Walter, a businessman w...

Knicks fans have one clear beef with The Post’s Mount Postmore selections

The Post kicked off its 15-part Mount Postmore series Wednesday, starting with our selections for the Knicks.

And as you’d expect with one of the most passionate fan bases in sports, the list elicited a range of reactions.

The biggest gripe in response to the list — which featured Patrick Ewing, Jalen Brunson, Walt Frazier and Willis Reed — was the inclusion of Brunson.

Despite his tremendous output since arriving at MSG, Brunson has only spent three seasons in New York and hasn’t reach...

Lakers being sold in $10 billion NBA bombshell

The Lakers are changing hands — for a sky-high price tag.

The Buss family is entering an agreement to sell its majority stake in the Lakers for approximately $10 billion to businessman Mark Walter, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday.

It marks the largest sale ever of a U.S. pro sports franchise.

Walter, who is also the primary owner of the Dodgers, is the CEO of TWG Global, a multinational conglomerate holding company.

Walter also has interests in several other professional...

New Mets reliever Justin Garza used video games to revive his stalled career

Stuck in Single-A with his confidence dwindling, Justin Garza began to consider quitting baseball when COVID-19 put the world on hold in 2020.

But as he took time for himself away from the field, an unlikely hobby helped the right-handed pitcher get his career back on track: video games.

“ ‘MLB The Show’ actually was a big part about me learning how to pitch and figuring out how to pitch,” said Garza, whom the Mets acquired from the Giants Saturday. “It’s so realistic at times, just play...
